Chapter 15

Ultimate Sacrifice

Cass

We’ve been at the beach house for two weeks. When I talk to Joe, he sounds exhausted and frustrated. I’m also starting to feel like he isn’t telling me everything.

The boys miss him and so do I. Sasha wants to get back to her life and I can’t blame her. Being stuck with me and my little brats can’t be ideal.

I walk through the house with Felix on my hip as I look for everyone else. I’ve just awoken from a much-needed nap. This pregnancy has been kicking my arse. I don’t know if it’s because I’m already chasing after four or if this little fucker in here is determined to give me hell, but it seems like my energy is always tapped.

I find Ronan on the couch with John on his chest, both out for the count. Laughter from outside causes me to look out the window. Sash has Wyatt and Noah on the Big Wheels she bought for them.

“Spoiled brats,” I mutter to myself.

They’re riding around the driveway, chasing after each other as Sash cheers them on. Noah’s little cheeks are red as he works his legs to catch up to his brother. John stirs from his sleep, waking Ronan as well.

“Hey, siúr,” Ronan says sheepishly. I pluck John up before he can make a fuss.

“Hey, don’t sister me. Falling asleep on the job, you slacker?”

He rubs the back of his neck and blushes. “He fell asleep first. I didn’t want to wake you and Felix. So I kept him with me and nodded off.”

“Aye, sure he did.” I twist my lips and side eye Ronan.

“I’m going to take a quick shower,” he says.

I look to John. “Want to go outside?” I coo to him and Felix.

John gives me a shy smile and nods his head sleepily. Felix only watches me as he always does. I wonder what goes on that little head of his.

He’s a bright boy. His eyes are sharp, and he seems to always be assessing the situation. With Felix on my hip and John’s little hand in mine, I head outside. The sun is baking. I’ll burn if I sit out here too long. I opt to sit on the covered porch in the shade on the swing Joe added just for days like this.

The beach house was a gift from Joe. We’ve enjoyed it over the years, although I have a few renovations I’ve been after Joe about.

“You look rested,” Sash says as she comes to take a seat with me.

“That nap was just what I needed,” I say, releasing John and Felix as they go to play with their little cars on the mat we set up on the porch.

“I’m going to order some pizza if that’s cool with you. The boys keep asking me too. I told them I’d check with you once you were up.”

“It’s fine. I’m not in the mood to cook anyway. I could use the break.”

“I’m here to help,” she says before releasing a heavy breath.
